What is a Mummy MOT?

A Mummy MOT is a specialist postnatal examination for women following both vaginal and caesarean deliveries. It will assess how your posture, pelvic floor muscles and stomach muscles are recovering after birth. Mums need to bend, squat and lift so we provide clinical post-natal care and functional exercises for female clients following birth (no matter how long ago) to help with your recovery and return to exercise safely.

It’s recommended that women have an initial assessment after their 6-8 week GP check, but we also treat women who gave birth years ago that may still have a tummy gap or related pelvic floor issues.

Who needs a Mummy MOT?

After having a baby, half of all women have a weakness in either their tummy or pelvic floor area, while over a third suffer from complex pelvic pain. This can create instability and weak core strength and results in altered transfer load, back pain, pelvic pain, and bladder and bowel weakness. A Mummy MOT helps women avoid these distressing and often embarrassing symptoms.

What does a Mummy MOT include?

A Mummy MOT focuses on a postnatal check that examines the pelvic floor (internal and external), pelvic alignment, musculoskeletal health and diastasis recti (tummy gap). This postnatal assessment can help to identify, assess and manage any postnatal pelvic health conditions. Included in your initial assessment is the following:

  • 1-hour postnatal assessment with a specialist
  • In-depth check of pelvic floor strength and tummy gap
  • Assessment of any physical problems arising from pregnancy and birth
  • A bespoke postnatal recovery programme devised especially for you, your lifestyle and your fitness goals. This includes specific and safe post-natal exercises to improve stability, posture and core strength.
